COL Thomas V. Petrini, a native of New Port Richey, Florida, commissioned into the Air Defense Artillery in 2003 upon graduating from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina.
His first assignment was to the 6th Battalion, 52d Air Defense Artillery Regiment (Patriot), Ansbach, Germany, where he served as a Launcher Platoon Leader, Fire Control Platoon Leader, and Assistant Battalion S-3.
In 2008, after graduating from the Field Artillery Captain Career Course, COL Petrini returned to 6-52 ADA at Fort Sill, OK, where he assumed command of C Battery. In 2009, he led the battery’s permanent change of station to Osan Airbase, Republic of Korea. In 2010, he was assigned to the G3/5/7 (G33), U.S. Army Fires Center of Excellence, Fort Sill, OK, as a Current Operations Officer, later becoming the Deputy Chief of Current Operations. From 2011 to 2012, COL Petrini deployed to Iraq as a Foreign Military Sales Case Manager, Office of Security Cooperation – Iraq.
In 2014, he served as the S-3 and later the Executive Officer (XO) for the 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment (Patriot) at Fort Bragg, NC, deploying to the Central Command Area of Responsibility (CENTCOM AOR). He later became the Brigade Deputy Commanding Officer, 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Fort Bragg, NC.
From 2018 to 2019, COL Petrini served as the XO to the Director for Test, Missile Defense Agency and later as XO to the Director of the Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office, Redstone Arsenal, AL. From 2019 to 2021, he commanded the 1st Battalion, 62d Air Defense Artillery Regiment (Patriot/THAAD), Fort Hood, TX, deploying the battalion to the CENTCOM AOR. From 2021 to 2023, COL Petrini served as the Deputy G-3 for the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, HI. In 2024, he assumed duties as the Army Capability Manager – Strategic Missile Defense, later transitioning the organization into the Transformation Integration Directorate – Army Golden Dome for America. COL Petrini is currently assigned as the SMDC G-3, Deputy Chief of Staff as of 2026.
COL Petrini holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The Citadel and master’s degrees from both the U.S. Naval and U.S. Army War Colleges. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (7 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Army Basic Space Badge.
